壁画项目

一项倡议 艺术学院艺术与设计系, 壁画项目 是一个 社区伙伴关系.

The project evolved from an initial proposal of the former Montclair Arts Council, brought forward by Councilman Dale Jacobs in early 2010, to install public-art murals in the Township of Montclair.  多年前,大学代表助理. Dean Linda Davidson had proposed a similar idea to the Township Municipality, i.e. that 大学 art students be enabled to develop a mural for the walkway between the east side of Valley Road 和 the public parking lot.  还有艺术委员会的新提案, support provided by the former Montclair Parking Authority, 大学教师表达的兴趣, 和 a willingness on the part of building owner Vanik Properties to allow use of the proposed space, the time became ripe to solidify a new town/gown/business partnership.

2010年11月,在张国强教授的指导下. 朱莉·赫弗南和扎卡里·沃拉德, “The History of Montclair” mural was created 和 installed on the south wall of the site.  这幅画的尺寸是35 × 8英尺. painted canvas reflecting elements of nature 和 depictions of the town’s history 和 its people.

在安装了第一幅壁画后不久. Heffernan 和 students became inspired by the wall opposite.  特点是五个明确的砖砌窗户, the structure seemed to beckon an installation of five individual artworks within the spaces. “Word Play” — based on a theme of plays on words — was, 因此, created 和 installed on the north wall of the walkway in June 2011.

十六个月后, 超级风暴桑迪肆虐了新泽西州和, 不幸的是, 2012年10月, ripped the History of Montclair painting off of its wood panel structure.

2012年6月,一个新的作品, “绘画逆境” replaced the original mural to recognize the contributions of community organizations in Montclair.

“庆祝十大博彩推荐排名艺术”- 2015年9月

The concept for this mural evolved as a way to represent the arts in Montclair, depicting of the lively 和 growing arts culture that the town of Montclair has nurtured 和 supported over the years. It was a challenge 和 an extremely rewarding experience for both collaborating artists, 路易莎·赫内奥和安东尼·科普兰, both undergraduate painting students at 十大博彩推荐排名州立大学.

虽然奥. Coplan和Ms. Henao originally designed the mural to be viewed in passing from either direction, they re-oriented it to feature events in the life of Montclair from left to right. They begin at the Iris Garden showing people appreciating 和 cultivating the beauty of the communal garden. Subsequent panels transport the viewer to the bustling boulevards of Montclair, 艺术在十大博彩推荐排名艺术博物馆蓬勃发展的地方, then to the various festivals like the Montclair Film Festival 和 the city’s jazz festival, as well as the town’s diverse restaurant 和 culinary arts scene. With Montclair’s history of support for the performing arts in mind, the students worked to incorporate both its outdoor performances 和 indoor venues in the mural, as well as representing the acclaimed Wellmont Theater.  The artists also intended to present the artwork with a strong chromatic 和 linear sensibility, engaging 和 guiding the viewer from one panel to the next, 以刺激为目的, 阴谋, 并激励.

绘画逆境- 2013年6月

这幅壁画, “绘画逆境,” is dedicated to the good works performed by Montclair’s not-for-profit community organizations, 基于教授的概念. 朱莉·霍夫曼 和 student collaborators to recognize “local heroes.”  As an example of the organizations’ various missions of service, the students focused on 妇女与司法合作伙伴, a non-profit which provides free legal assistance to victimized women 和 their children.  The combined realistic 和 abstract imagery of the mural depicts the theme of “Family Violence” 和 how it is often couched in a veil of silence. The location itself also lends a context to the work in that it is situated in a “dark alley.” Students felt the environment conceptually resonated with the subject, of which is oftentimes cloaked in neglect 和 secrecy. 这幅壁画 illustrates both the vulnerability of children, who are depicted within the shadowy areas of the brick facade, in contrast to the implications of a community working together to overcome obstacles dealing with abuse. The ultimate intent of the work is to call attention 和 pay tribute to altruistic missives of organizations such as Partners 和 how positive contributions can have an impact on both a global 和 community level.

The “绘画逆境” project was coordinated by 教授. 凯瑟琳Bebout 和 created by students Laken Whitecliffe (lead artist) along with Jeremy Bell 和 Ariel Williams.
